Understanding IRS processes and refund status
Waiting for your tax refund? The IRS provides several ways to check the status of your refund. Here's everything you need to know:
The fastest and most reliable way to check your refund status is through the IRS website:
The IRS has received your tax return and is processing it. This is the first step in the process.
Your refund has been approved and the IRS is preparing to send it. You'll see an estimated deposit date.
Your refund has been sent to your bank account or mailed to your address. The tool will show the date it was sent.
Download the free IRS2Go app on your smartphone to check your refund status on the go.
Call the IRS Refund Hotline at 1-800-829-1954. You'll need the same information as the online tool.
This usually means your return hasn't been processed yet. Wait 24 hours after e-filing or 4 weeks after mailing a paper return.
If the refund amount shown is different from what you expected, the IRS may have made adjustments. You'll receive a notice explaining any changes.
